Arcbase advices:
● having arrived in the US, wait at least ten days before applying for a driver’s license. The reason is that the government systems need to be updated with your information. So even if you would like to get your driver’s license as quickly as possible, allow ten days of waiting time;
● while waiting for the government systems to update, talk with your office or school officials to find out more about any requirements that may be applicable to your case;
● if you are a student ask your designated school official to check out whether your status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System is active. All students with F, M and J exchange visas are registered in this database;
● once you know that your status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System is active, allow another two days before applying for a driver’s license.
Make sure that your name, date of birth and status are correct and the same in all the corresponding documents as well as in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. Otherwise, the local Department of Motor Vehicles will deny your application.
